It takes 12 steps to turn a cocoa bean into a chocolate bar, and requires a special collaboration between cocoa farmer and chocolate maker to create the perfect chocolate bar.
Chocolate should taste like so much more than just ... chocolate.
Just like wine develops flavours based on where the grapes are grown, cacao beans take on the unique and distinct flavour of the environment it is grown in. Our beans have earthy, floral and fruity notes because of the rich Tanzanian soil and the surrounding fruit farms.
To create the most complex flavours we have developed a fermentation process that reveals these notes and preserves them for you to enjoy.
This dedication to excellence throughout the process is what we refer to as Bean-to-Bar, and you will instantly notice the difference.
Afrikoa is proud to be the only chocolate producer in Africa that uses purely heirloom cacao beans. Ancient heirloom cacao beans, also known as the ‘diamonds’ of cacao beans, are of vital cultural and culinary significance. Our chocolate is naturally organic and contains no gluten, GMO’s or palm oil.
Direct trade is so much more than ‘Fair Trade’ because it does not depend on grants in any way. By trading directly with cacao farmers, they earn significantly more as there are no ‘middlemen’ involved. That means these farmers are able to support their families while able to make the investments required to continue producing the finest cacao beans.
For us Direct Trade requires a special collaboration between farmer and chocolate maker in success, ethical practices and professionalism, which results in the perfect chocolate bar.
Afrikoa offers a bean to bar and tasting experience through CityPass. Bookings are essential to ensure you do not miss out. Watch this space for an increased offering of different chocolate experiences.

Afrikoa believes in direct trade, which allows us to deal directly with the cacao farmers and cut out any intermediaries. This ensures that farmers receive more income for their invaluable and hard work. Direct trade is much more than Fair Trade. It’s an investment in a common goal and future success.
Our beans are sourced directly from Co-operative farmers located in Kyela, Tanzania. Visit our Impact page for more information.
Afrikoa prides itself for its ethical and transparent cacao supply chain.
Historically we have been able to purchase up to 50 tonnes of cacao beans per year.
Going forward we would like to see that grow to between 75 and 100 tonnes within the next two years.
We pre-finance the purchase of the cacao beans, which removes delays in the farmers being paid for their produce and we are actively working with the farmers to achieve their international organic certification credentials.
Possibly the most important work we do is advocacy for a chocolate industry free from child labour, unethical employment and payment practices and the irreplaceable contribution that Africans make to the chocolate industry and value chain.
Get in touch and we’ll make it happen.
